Doctor Strange is a good movie. No, it is a very good movie. In fact, it is one of the best of the Marvel movies to date. Yepp, it is that good.
But why isn’t it great?
I mean Benedict Cumberbatch is inspired casting as Dr Steven Strange finding comic timing that he doesn’t find much use for in his other roles and is convincing in the action scenes and the supporting stars are having a great time too.
The special effects are literally mind blowing – putting the special into special effects.
But the film suffers, in the same way, many of the Marvel movies do. The villains are not given the same time and attention that the heroes do. The Marvel movies have yet to find their Joker or Lex Luthor. Aside from Loki (and perhaps the Red Skull), the villains are literally there to be bad. Nothing more. no need to have any motivation behind their deeds. They wear a black hat and are there to be bashed.
Mads Mikkelsen joins Christopher Eccleston, Guy Pearce, Jeff Bridges, Daniel Bruhl (there’s quite a list) as really good actors who do nothing more but put schemes into play for the hero to thwart.
Look to the early Bond films or Raiders of the Lost Ark, as a way to put together a charismatic villain
Cate Blanchett is the villainess in the nextThor movie, Let’s hope they don’t waste her great talents.
But aside from this … watch this movie and watch it again. You won’t be disappointed.
